Warehouse can be a leading trend in energy efficient design as small measures can make a big difference. Heating and lightning will be the two largest energy uses for warehouses. These two elements are also the best targets for improving efficiency. From energy conservative to updated lighting, heating, and cooling technologies, numerous techniques are provided to help a company green their warehouse.

Having a green warehouse will not only reduce climate and environmental impact on earth, but also give opportunities for improved operations, lower operating cost, as well as establish sustainable business practices. So, how to make your warehouse greener? Here are 11 tips from Storage Solution to make a dream of greener world with greener warehouse come true.

  • Apply green roofs

Green roof is a roof covered in plants. It will reduce stormwater runoff, help insulate building, and moderate temperature as well as create friendly environment. As a result, it will give you less HVAC use and energy which helps cooling the heat in summer.

Not only that, green roof also benefits from capturing airborne pollutants, improving air quality, insulating roof, reducing noise level, and providing a wildlife habitat.

  • Normal roofs

If it is hard to apply green roofs in your warehouse, you can still help your warehouse greener by installing ordinary roof. However, you need to paint it white in order to reduce heat absorption and to add insulation for temperature regulation. In this case, your warehouse will be convenient for workers and is friendlier for the environment.

  • Windows

For windows, you can strategically place and skylight them to provide natural light for year round. By placing windows in a strategic area, you can provide and capture the sun’s heat in winter for warmth which will reduce heating costs. It can also reduce the need for other electric lights.

  • Lights

For lights, you should use motionless sensor combined with energy efficient fluorescent lights that can turn on immediately without needing to warm up. By using lighting control strategies such as scheduling, occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting, bi-level switching, and dimming to turn the lights off or down when not needed can also cut cost and are more efficient.

  • HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning)

HVAC should be maintained regularly. You should also change filters to reduce wasted energy used to heat and cool warehouse. Usually, 30 percent to 50 percent of all air conditioning energy is used to remove moisture from incoming air. And to improve efficiency, you should use a desiccant wheel. It will dry air before it enters the HVAC system.

Additionally, try to use radiant heaters in spaces to maintain indoor temperature year round. You should also turn off unoccupied heat. Not turning on the heating outside during unoccupied periods can save an average of about US $0.50 per hour for each 1,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of heated air.

  • Equipment

Electric forklifts are significantly more efficient than gas powered forklifts. Diesel and propane fuelled forklifts require extra ventilation which adds to the HVAC load. In this case, you can use a timer to charge electric forklift batteries during off-peak hours.

  • Insulation

Your company should have a good environment friendly insulation by verifying that wall and roof insulation levels meet the guidelines for your climate zone. You should as well operate air conditions for maximum temperature regulations.

  • Loading docks

When loading docks, make sure to insulate docks in order to retain heat in winter and cool air in summer. Help minimising your inflammation by adding seals around loading docks to maintain temperature when loading trucks. You can as well use dock shelters which enclose the rear of truck to reduce outdoor air exchange.

  • Doors

To reduce heating and cooling costs, you should partition your doors between walls segment of warehouse. As a result, it does not need a temperature control. So, you can save the budget.

  • Warehouse lot

You should reduce the amount of paving around your warehouse. You can position your warehouse lot in a landscape position to provide shading for building and surrounding paved areas.

  • Apply 3R in warehouse

Reduce – energy consumption with technologies like solar panels or intelligent electric which utilises off peak power, eliminate waste by reducing the amount of packaging products or use biodegradable materials, go paperless, and use low flow toilets and dual flush toilets to help decrease water use.

Recycle – minimise waste by wood shipping pallets and use warehouse equipment like forklifts and storage shelves to give items a second chance before sending them to landfill.

Reuse – provide recycle bin in your warehouse to give materials a new life, and use reusable containers which made of plastics. It will reduce waste, reuse, and save your warehouse budget.
